本書は、これまでの画業を振り返る初の本格的な展覧会となった「小松美羽展　岡本太郎に挑む―霊性とマンダラ」（川崎市岡本太郎美術館、2022年6月25日〜8月28日）の展覧会図録を書籍化した『小松美羽　Transparent Chaos―霊性とマンダラ―』の英語版。

This book, Miwa Komatsu Transparent Chaos: Spirituality and Mandala is an English translation of a general distribution version of an exhibition catalogue of the first full-scale exhibition looking back Komatsu’s life as a painter.


The world of prayer only Miwa Komatsu can paint.

Born in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, 1984, contemporary artist Miwa Komatsu developed her own particular view on life and death through her close experience of life and death of living beings in rich nature. Then, she starts writing motifs that are inspired by “something invisible”, such as messengers of gods, divine beast and prayers of people. For Komatsu who considers “Art is a remedy that heal soul”, creation is with prayer and is a sacred ritual. Regarding such manner of creation, Komatsu could be taken as an one of a kind artist.
The book is constituted of Komatsu’s early copper print works, works from the period in which Komatsu’s expression developed through her experience in New York, and works created in 2022, the year the exhibition was held. Exhibition views that show the scale and presence of her works are also included in the book.
The Great Harmonization – NEXT MANDALA, limitedly exhibited for this exhibition and dedicated to commemorate the 1200th anniversary of the Shingon Buddhist sect, is a pair of 4-meter-square-large contemporary Mandala created by Komatsu. In 2023, the work is dedicated to Kyō-ō-gokoku-ji, the head temple of the Shingon Buddhist sect and is closed to public thereafter, thus it would be only shown on this book.
Komatsu so far called the power to compound, putting together various things “Yamato Power” and rendered it a creative motif.
After working on Home of Soul – NEXT MANDALA in Kōyasan, 2021, she learned that the power of great harmony is something needed in this contemporary age, and from the Great Acceleration to the Great Harmonization; this is the meaning of Komatsu’s recent roll in painting and is her principle of creation.
Komatsu’s conspicuous and energetic works moves our souls and gives us power to live through our cramped contemporary society.
